I always stay in downtown Vegas, at the Golden Nugget. Everything is walking distance, including the Fremont and the California Hotels and Casino. The California has a great coffee shop with a $7.95 prime rib, that includes a salad bar, carb, veggies, and dessert of cherries jubilee. There is an ABC Store, just like in Hawaii, around the corner. Everything is just much better and less expensive than the Strip.
I enjoy a few things down on the Strip. One is the Forum Shops at Caesars’ Palace. Another is the Carnegie Deli at the Mirage. Their sandwiches are the biggest and best anywhere this side of the Hudson River. I particularly enjoy their beef tongue sandwich, although the Reuben is their signature sandwich. Also, in the area are the Fashion Show Mall, Vegas Town Center, and the new City Center. But I do not enjoy the traffic, the redneck drunks (that’s redundant), and the sun burned tourists.
Another Vegas observation, what happened to all the great performers here? It is so sad, when Wayne Newton or Barry Manilow are the big names. Bring back Big Frank, Dino, and Sammy. I will even settle for Diana Ross or Aretha. And this fixation on comedy and impersonators. I love Frank Caliendo at the Monte Carlo, but the rest are hacks.
Usually, some of my family is here during this time as well. So, this trip is on my schedule and my terms. My brother will be in town in June for a big Senior poker tournament, however. He and my son Matt, usually try to play the World Series of Poker each year at the Rio. I will also visit dear friends Ken and Debbie, who live out in Summerlin. It is also a short drive to Red Rock State Park, one of the best outdoor activity centers in the Vegas area.
And I love the old neon signs here. I have included a nice collection of downtown neon and other by gone features.
