For those of you here in California, this information came from an article on MSN’s website. For those of you outside of the area, I figured all of this out by myself, and plan to litigate MSN for stealing my information. Most answers apply to the lower 48, since Hawaii and Alaska would be the correct answer for almost every question.
Which state has the most lakes?
We all know that the state of Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes. But Wisconsin, more known for cheese and the Friday night fish fry, has over 15,000 lakes. Interestingly, some of the lakes are so small, they do not have names. Maybe I can go there and have a lake named after me?
Which state has the fewest people?
I am certain it is Wyoming, although it is a beautiful state, with Grand Teton National Park. According to a 2011 census, Wyoming has a grand total of 568,158 residents. The next question would be to find out if there are more cows in Wyoming than people? Actually, Montana has three times the number of cows as it does people!
Which state has the lowest point of elevation?
That question should be posed differently. Lowest elevation seems like a real oxymoron. Actually, the lowest point in the US is in California’s Death Valley, at 282 feet below sea level. Having been there, albeit in winter, underscores the fact that the highest recorded temperature in the world, 134 degrees F, was recorded here as well. And the area smells.
Which state has the deepest cave?
Hawaii has the Kazamura Cave, at 3,614 feet deep. It is actually a lava tube. In the 48 contiguous states, New Mexico’s Lechuguilla Cave is the deepest at 1,604 feet deep. The limestone cave is located in Carlsbad Caverns. I do not like caves and enclosed spaces.
Which state has the longest coastline?
The obvious answer is Alaska. In fact, Alaska has a longer coastline than all of the other 49 states! In the lower 48, the longest is Florida, with 1,350 miles of accessible beach. Florida is also home to our country’s southernmost point, Key West, just a stone’s throw to Cuba.
Which state has the most national parks?
California is where it’s at, for national parks, and kooky people. Actually, California is tied with Alaska at eight, even though President Obama just made Pinnacles National Monument into a national park. Can you name the eight? The obvious one is Yosemite, along with Lassen, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Redwood, and Channel Islands.
Which state has the largest nude beach?
OK, Barry and Webb know the answer to this. It is Black’s Beach in San Diego. They say the beach is beautiful. I would imagine this argument is much like Playboy magazine, where the articles are more interesting than the photos! I have never been there. Yet!
Which state has the tallest mountain?
Outside of Alaska’s Mount McKinley, the tallest is California’s Mount Whitney, at 14,494 feet. It was only 14,492 when I had to memorize it in grade school. The mountain is snow capped, and the most frequently climbed mountain in the Sierra Nevada Range. Hikers now need a permit. Whitney is less than 100 miles from Death Valley. I do not plan on climbing to the top.
Which state has the longest straight road?
Somewhat debatable, the answer is North Dakota’s Highway 46 at 123 miles. The straightest portion is 31 miles from Gackle to Beaver Creek. So, set the car on cruise control, and sit back and watch North Dakota fly by. How many of you know about the Eisenhower Rule?
Which state has the fewest neighboring states?
Obviously, leaving out both Hawaii and Alaska, the answer is Maine, with only one bordering state, New Hampshire. But there are two northern Canadian provinces, Quebec and New Brunswick bordering Maine.
Now, here are my geography lessons.

It is a tie among Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia. Fourth places are all the other southern states. I will stay away from the brother-sister statistics.

Again, a tie among North Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. What else do they have in common? They all grow tobacco!

Correct! It is a tie between California and Hawaii.
How many islands does the state of Hawaii have?
