Scottsdale is the spring training home of the San Francisco Giants at the Scottsdale Stadium, the Colorado Rockies and the Arizona Diamondbacks, both at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. This is the latest and greatest of Spring Training facilities, with a thousand square foot weight room, among other amenities.
Other teams that host spring training camps in Arizona include:
Chicago Cubs at Sloan Park
Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers at Camelback Ranch (don’t they Dodgers belong at Vero Beach?)
Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians at Goodyear Ball Park
Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers at Surprise Stadium
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Tempe Diablo Stadium (former home of the Mariners)
Milwaukee Brewers at Maryvale Baseball Park
Oakland Athletics at Hohokam Stadium (former home of the Cubs, out in Mesa)
San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners at Peoria Sports Complex
Back when I first went to Spring Training with my son and daughter, only the Giants, Athletics, Cubs, Indians, Padres, and Seattle called Arizona their spring time home. Now, there are fourteen! This is BIG business for the greater Phoenix area.
Hotels are more expensive in March. Restaurants popular with ball players and celebrities are hard to get into around dinner time. The hiking and biking trails are full of both locals and tourists. Even the shopping malls are full!!! We were “forced” to stay at an Extended Stay Suites here. Never stay inone of these spartan and chinsy joints. Never!!! But it was the only place in Scottsdale under $200 with a decent location.
We also dined at two of our favorite places, the venerable Los Sombreros, and the upstart organic Italian Picazzo, that we found in Sedona. Tonight, we head to the best sushi happy hour in the valley at Sakana. Translared to “FISH” in Japanese. But be warned, get there early, or wait.
Best of all, I got to take a sneak preview of the SF Giants yesterday. The even numbered year is here! Buster and the boys look ready, the beer is cold, and the halter tops are blooming. Spring here is truly a revival.
