I am not going to tell you this is the best list but it is a list!
The 25 best places to travel abroad
The following places are listed in alphabetical order. Instead of ranking destinations this year, Money placed our picks into five discrete categories. For each destination, we included a cost estimate, which factors in airfare as well as local prices for room and board. (See our full Best Places to Travel 2023 methodology for more on how we chose the places and calculated the cost.)
I will comment on those I have visited.
Bucket List
- Kochi, India
- Medellin, Colombia (former home of Pablo Escobar, it has transformed into a great place to visit)
- Nagano, Japan
- Prague, Czech Republic (very affordable now but too many tourists)
- Tbilisi, Georgia
- Utrecht, Netherlands (I can’t remember)
Family Friendly
- Dublin, Ireland (great place to spend 4 or 5 days, big party city, and many great sites to visit)
- Gdansk, Poland
Luxury on a Budget
- Chania, Greece (headed here in May, on the island of Crete)
- Lisbon, Portugal (love almost any city in Portugal, great food and weather)
- Lyon, France (it was too long ago)
- Prince Edward Island, Canada
- Stresa, Italy
Off Season
- Chiang Mai, Thailand (great weather, many outdoor activities, wonderful night market)
- Marrakech, Morocco (day trip to Tangiers only)
- Mexico City, Mexico (big foodie city, but be careful of the altitude)
- Monteverde, Costa Rica (two visits, wonderful eco-tourism, ziplines and culture)
- Quito, Ecuador (grand old city but so many places to visit on day trips, including Otavalo)
- Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (there is only one Rio and you must go!)
Solo Travel
- Barcelona, Spain (it was too long ago)
- Lima, Peru (pleasant surprise, great foodie city)
- Ljubljana, Slovenia (headed there in May)
- Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam (changed planes only)
- Montreal, Canada (like Paris without the bullsh*t!!!!)
- Reykjavik, Iceland (3-hour layover only)
They left many great places off their list. But, as I said, it is a list, and a good foundation from which to build.
My two favorite places in the world are the Amazon rainforest, and Angkor Wat in Cambodia. I would go back to either one!
